History

The department of Haematology & Blood Transfusion is one of the four arms of Pathology in the Faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences in the College of Health Sciences of the University of Ilorin, Ilorin, Nigeria. The department is involved in the teaching of all aspects of Haematology and Transfusion Medicine to undergraduate Medical Students in their 400 Level of the MB,BS Programme. The Haematology courses form an integral part of the 3 Pathology postings which is undertaken at 400 Level (1st clinical year) of the MB,BS programme, and are given alongside with courses in the other 3 disciplines of the Pathological sciences namely: Chemical Pathology and Immunology, Morbid Anatomy, and Medical Microbiology and Parasitology.

The department office is situated at the Block A of the New College of Health Sciences buildings at the University of Ilorin Permanent Site, and the Students’ Laboratories are situated in the Laboratory Complex at the Old College of Health Sciences premises within the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital. The Haematology Laboratory is well equipped with necessary equipment and teaching materials for students’ learning.
